2024 Pittsburgh Pirates Dominican League top performers
A look at some of the top performers in the DSL this year for the Pirates.
The Dominican Summer League wrapped up a few days ago, and the playoffs are underway. Neither of the Pirates teams made it to the postseason, so their season is over.
So, now is a good time to review some of the top performers during the DSL. I set the minimum plate appearances to 100 and innings pitched to 20.

Perhaps the most notable hitter to come out of the DSL this past season was Edward Florentino. At 17 years old, not only was he one of the most productive hitters on either DSL team, but he has now found his way on the team’s top prospect list for FanGraphs and MLB Pipeline.
Florentino slashed .260/.439/.459 with 17 extra-base hits (five home runs) and more walks (38) than strikeouts (36). He also stole eight bases on 10 attempts.
Buying too much into DSL numbers can be dangerous, but he does have a lot of promising baseline numbers, especially for his age.
Cristian Jauregui is another player who was interesting going into this year. He placed in each top category except for walk rate and led in stolen bases. He finished with a slash line of .274/.407/.393 and a wRC+ of 125.
Samuel Escudero was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade involving Troy Stokes Jr. and slashed .311/.410/.479 with 13 extra-base hits (three home runs) while walking (20) more than he struck out (15). He also threw out 36% of would-be base stealers behind the plate.
Florentino, along with Phillandro Williams, Michell Ojeda, Kendrick Herrera, Frankeli Mesta, and Bralyn Brazoban, are all new players to the organization and are mentioned above.
Brazoban was the big signing this past year, but struggled with a .155/.276/.209 line, and a 46 wRC+. Isaias Dipre took a big step forward, leading in home runs and one of two hitters with a .300 batting average or better.

Nicolas Carreno was among the leaders in a few categories but was traded at the deadline. Rafael Mendez was also among the leaders, but he was released the other day.
Based on the little information available and his success at 16 years old, Dariel Francia was a player I was intrigued by going into the season. It looked like he faded a bit but was still able to improve his innings pitched and ERA while also seeing improvements in strikeout and walk rates.
Angel Camacho and Jesus Clode were on the older side of things for the level but still had good seasons. Reinold Navarro made the DSL All-Star game and was featured in Baseball America for having the ‘best fastball.’
