AFL Update: Pitching has a strong week in Arizona for Pirates
Pirates pitching have a good week for Scottsdale
While hitting has stolen the show so far in the Arizona Fall League, the Pirates pitchers stepped up their game this past week.
Counting the single inning that Khristian Curtis pitched on Sunday in the game that was suspended, the pitchers the Pirates sent over to the AFL combined for 13 shutout innings this past week.
They allowed just four hits, walked three, and struck out 16 batters.
Curtis led the way, as he tossed four shutout innings, allowing just a walk and a hit while striking out two on the 28th. He followed that up with an inning where he struck out major leaguers Matt McLain and Thomas Saggese and then upcoming prospect Zyhir Hope.
That game was suspended due to rain, with no clear decision quite on what happens next, so there’s a chance the game doesn’t count. It was still impressive nonetheless.
Derek Diamond pitched twice, allowing a hit, and a walk, while striking out a batter over 2.2 innings pitched. Valentin Linarez pitched 1.2 innings on Halloween, striking out four. He’s allowed just one hit over seven innings this fall, and he’s throwing more strikes.
After allowing six earned runs in his first fall appearance, Brandan Bidois has surrendered one since. That included pitching 1.2 innings on the 30th, where he struck out four. He still walked a batter, which has remained an issue—he has eight in 5.2 innings this fall.
Eddy Yean pitched a pair of shutout innings, striking out a batter.
After a strong start to the fall, Termarr Johnson ended his stint with a 0-5 week, although he did walk five times.
Sammy Siani continues to hit, going 4-10 with a grand slam, while also driving in eight runs. Kervin Pichardo matched Siani when it comes to hits, with four, one of which was a double.
Scottsdale currently has a 5-12 record, good for fifth in the division.
