18 year old catcher slugged his way into roster spot with Bradenton
One of the biggest surprises in the lower levels this season has been catcher Axiel Plaz. The 18-year-old has been raking since joining the Bradenton Marauders back in May.
Plaz is currently (entering June 26) in third place when it comes to home runs in the Florida State League while playing 35 fewer games than the leader.
He walked right into Single-A and started slugging. Eighteen of his first 32 hits have been extra-base hits.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Plaz's success was that he wasn’t playing particularly well in the FCL before getting promoted and only found his way to Bradenton due to several injuries at the catcher position.
The Marauders found themselves down to one healthy catcher—Omar Alfonzo—and were forced to bring up Plaz.
He quickly earned his spot and never returned to the Complex, even getting time at first base to keep the bat in the lineup.
