Bucs on Deck Top 25: Midseason updated list
Midseason update on the top 25 prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates system
With graduations, the Pirates lost some of their top-rated and highly-drafted prospects at the beginning of the season. They will also lose Paul Skenes at some point, potentially creating a multi-prospect race for who will be at the top of the system.
This update features the site's top 25 prospects, with their original rank, best pitch/tool, brief scouting report, and 2024 update on their outlook/performance.
1. Bubba Chandler, RHP, Age: 21
Original Rank: 2
Best Pitch: Fastball
Scouting Report: Drafted in the third round out of Georgia, Chandler was a two-way star with a scholarship to play baseball and football at Clemson. His raw athleticism allowed him to work quickly through the lower levels, and now he is focusing solely on pitching; you can see the flashes of the upside on a nightly basis. He can run the fastball into the upper 90s, and it has plus life, especially up in the zone. His change-up has become above-average and also flashes more at times. The breaking pitches (he has sometimes thrown a slider and curveball) have shown promise but need more work. The biggest issue is his control, which sometimes wavers, and somewhat violent delivery; there could also be a reliever risk at some point in his career.
