How are the new players in the organization performing
The Pittsburgh Pirates were busy at the trade deadline, acquiring multiple players through several trades.
We are closing in on two weeks since the deadline, here is a quick rundown on how each player has performed since the trade.
Bryan De La Cruz
Acquired from the Miami Marlins for prospects Garret Forrester and Jun-Seok Shim, De La Cruz got off to a strong start, picking up a pair of hits in his first game with the Pirates.
Since then, it has been a struggle, going 2-30 (.067). He’s also walked just once and struck out 14 times (40 K%). Noted for his power, he has 18 home runs on the season, all four hits have been singles.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
IKF was nearing his return from the injury list when the Pirates added him for Charles McAdoo. He’s hit the ground running and has shown no slowdown from the career season he is having.
In seven games with the Pirates, IKF has multiple hits in four of them. He’s gone 9-31 (.290) with two doubles and two triples while driving in a pair while slowly settling in as the team’s leadoff hitter.
Billy Cook
Initially drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, the Pirates added a much-needed upper-level hitting prospect in exchange for Patrick Reilly.
Cook has hit the ground running, collecting nine hits in seven games. He’s shown some power, collecting five doubles and a home run while also flashing some speed in swiping four bags.
In total, he has 17 total bases and has slashed .409/.500/.773. On the defensive side, Cook has played all three outfield positions after playing center on Saturday.
Nick Yorke
A first-round pick back in 2020, Yorke has hit the ground running, picking up hits in all 10 games he has played since joining Indianapolis. He’s gone 13-35 with four doubles and has played 2B/LF/CF.
It was his first time in center field during his professional career.
Ronaldys Jimenez
The Pirates threw in some extra cash along with Martin Perez to secure the left-handed Jimenez.
He pitched three no-hit innings during his first outing, walking three and striking out four. The second game was a little rougher, allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
Walks have been an issue, as he has allowed eight free passes but has struck out eight in 4.2 innings.
Josh Walker
He had an incredibly short stint in the Pirates’ organization, pitching once, then getting placed on the injured list before being designated for assignment and eventually released.

Patrick Reilly: 3.1 IP - 2 H - 2 BB - 5 K

Nicolas Carreno: 5.1 IP - 5 H - 4 ER - 6 BB - 4 K
Charles McAdoo: 3-23 - 2B - 2 RBI - 5 BB - 10 K - 2 SB

Charles McAdoo is 2-for-23 in seven games. .406 OPS.
It’s time to bring Cook, Yorke, Davis and maybe some others up and get rid of these non-producing roster fillers who aren’t coming back next year anyway, or at least I sure hope not. Stop pretending that this team has any real shot at the playoffs and let’s see what these guys can do. It could infuse the team with some energy and make the remaining games more interesting to watch too.
