After the Winter Meetings were almost two thirds of the way through and the biggest thing to happen for the Pittsburgh Pirates was slotting in ninth in the 2024 Rule 4 Draft, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported late Tuesday night that the team acquired left-handed starting pitcher Marco Gonzales (and cash considerations) from the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later or cash, the team’s first big move of the offseason and the first of what is likely several pitching dominoes to fall.
So we get an experienced (sometimes good experiences) LHSP with a salary of $12 mil and we only have to pay him $3 or $4 mil, and then we can try to get even that money back at the trade deadline?
Only surprise for me was Lopez. Agree with an earlier comment. Saw him in Greensboro in 2022, and he looked like he was going to be a ball player. Was really looking forward to him in Altoona in 2023. Maybe something happened during the rehab?
Pretty much anyone that isn’t Cutch becomes an afterthought to me once they leave the Bucs. I’ll remember their time with the club but rarely ever go to check back in on them. He was too far away for the prospect crush to get too serious lol
They just finished an MLB rule 5 draft with 8 players chosen and an Minor League rule 5 draft with either 65 or 73 players taken in about the same it takes the NFL to make their first 3 picks.
I can't believe we left him unprotected in the minor league phase. When I saw him live with Greensboro in '22, I got a similar impression as I had from seeing Peguero live with Greensboro in '21--having that "it" quality. I came away as a big fan, and recall others having a similar view.
OTOH, he didn't go until midway through the second round so it's not like he was in high demand. But, I'd rather have a 21-year-old athletic SS with pop (10 HRs as a 19-year-old in Bradenton, 19 HRs as a 20-year-old in Greensboro) than someone like Beer.
What was payroll before and after trade?
Does it show 12M more or 2.75M
Erod off the board to the snakes at 4/80, feels like something we could have been able to do. Reds were another finalist for him
Great work Ethan. This was my first question when I saw the deal. How much are the cash considerations. Thanks.
Real Pirate fans will remember, or will have read about, Vic Davalillo. He passed away at age 84.
In 1971 the Cardinals traded Nelson Briles and Vic Davalillo to the Pirates for Matty Alou.
Helped win the Series against Baltimore as a pinch hitter. Nice player.

Could be that last statement.
Actually, according to a FanNation piece, Lopez' surgery didn't go well, so that last thing appears to be the explanation.
Well, anyone want a Lopez gamer? Picked up a broken bat a while back and was hoping to display it once (if) he got to the bigs. So much for that.
Keep it, he still may make it to the bigs.

Great stuff ethan!
Losing Dariel seems like it was probably very unnecessary even though hes a lotto ticket at best

And people complain Baseball is slow😁
CF PJ Hilson from SF.
Toolsy CF who can't hit. Got stuck in short-season ball for four years.
Told Murphy a quick look at his stats makes me think of a Braylon Bishop who made it to Double-A
Doesn't strikeout as much as Bishop though, our hitting development program will get him swinging and missing in no time.
Take 3B Marcos Cabrera from NYY.
Power potential but major contact issues.
Lost RHP Roelmy Garcia, another R level guy. Good arm, no clue where it's going. I've been watching him for a couple years and seen no improvement.
we´re getting robbed here
Lost C Rafael Escalante from rookie ball. Weird.
Also lost Omar Cruz. To the Pads, which is where he came from. Whatever.
they can´t have Bednar back
Lost Dariel Lopez. That seems awfully stupid to me, leaving him unprotected.
add it to the list of seemingly minor, yet still bad, Cherington decisions.
