Paul Skenes pitched six innings of one-run baseball but took the loss on Monday as the Pirates were shut out by the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0.
The rookie right-hander struck out seven, allowing just one walk and four hits on the night.
Ryan Borucki entered the seventh and allowed the next three runners to reach (two walks and a hit) before being lifted for Colin Holderman, who was able to limit the damage to a run.
Kyle Nicolas left after facing just one hitter with an apparent injury.
The offense managed just four hits on the night, with half coming from Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Nick Yorke made his major league debut and went 0-3 with a strikeout but did steal a base.
Pittsburgh will try to bounce back with Bailey Falter on the mound. He’s won two starts in September after having a rough month in August. He’ll face Lance Lynn, who tossed five innings of one-run baseball his last time out.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 pm ET.
