Man if they get swept by the white Sox it could end the Ben Cherington era.

I have 2 position players i would keep, Nicky G and Cruz. That's our young core of position players after 6 yrs of rebuild.

Bob Nutting's avatar

Why Cruz even? He's 3 months from 27, 102 wRC+ for the season wholly bolstered by March/April numbers, 40 wRC+ against LHP so a platoon bat at best, roughly a 67 wRC+ in June and July, doesn't know when or how to tag, etc etc.

Well.

In Toon-Town tonight i was pleased to see Johan Oviedo on the mound. Threw 50 pitches, very smooth, mostly strikes and did not look challenged by the Akron Rubber Ducks.

I could see that guy back on the Bump in the Burgh again.

Saw the comments about Cruz baserunning mistake in the 2nd, and went back and re-played that inning. Rabelo had 7 pitches to prepare Cruz for the several scenarios as a runner on 3rd with one out and a runner at first. That's a long AB to communicate and still Cruz starts toward home on the fly ball to left (8th pitch of the AB) and doesn't tag. I think I'm more pissed at Rabelo than Cruz, because my expectations for Cruz are so low on running the bases. Did Rabelo not tell Cruz a half dozen times to tag on a fly ball? Why not? Has he not learned a few words of Spanish? Both he and Brock need to go.

Can anyone think of a more discouraging season than this one? At least in 1985 it was obvious they weren't trying. Is it just me or is the current GM just so incompetent that he actually thought he was trying this season?

Worst 6 years of my life baseball wise with 2025 taking the cake, easily. Cherington doesn't just suck at building a roster. He builds boring, stupid baseball teams no one who cares about the game at all should want to watch.

The thing is that the 85 team was not in year six of a rebuild. It was a horrible season, but as recently as 83 they actually had an Interesting competitive team; they drafted Bonds that June, and then hired Thryft as GM in the off season. Within two years they were competitive again.

This just seems like a death march to nowhere in comparison.

No. This is the worst Pirates season of my lifetime. With their pitching, they had a chance to take a serious step forward and, instead, the idiot GM took a big step backward. Watching Skenes and Keller go a combined 7-18 is one of the most shameful spectacles I've ever seen.

I've given up trying to figure out what the moron thinks he's doing. Before the season even started, it was painfully obvious to anybody paying attention that he didn't improve the team in the offseason. If he thought he had, the only conceivable conclusion is that he's just incredibly stupid. IMO, it's naive to try to read some sort of rational purpose into how he's handled things. There's no purpose whatsoever. He's just flailing blindly.

I will be serious for just a minute: watching this team this year, I have been continually bewildered at how a GM could mess up so badly.

I think I have just about seen enough Bart as well. Doesn’t help the pitchers and had lost all ability to hit for power. If you aren’t going to trade him Henry should be starting 5-5 days per week

Hoffmark 83's avatar

They won't get anything for Bart plus who would be the backup? Besides, Davis can't hit

WTM's avatar

Neither can Bart. What difference does any of this make? What exactly is the downside of getting rid of players who can't play?

I don't get the point of Bart. Would rather have Davis and Delay, honestly.

Am I the only one who looked at the starting lineup a couple hours ago, somewhat looking forward to a game after 4 days of no baseball.

And then was deflated looking at our lineup.....the same ole sh*tty players for the most part.

Who would have thought that after the Cardinals series the pitching (apart from Skenes and Keller) would fall apart this much? Y'all still want to trade Keller?

Buccoboy's avatar

Why? Is Keller going to save this shit show?

Through no fault of his own, Keller is 3-10. I'm sure they can find somebody else to go 3-10 with this clown show.

StatsCbl's avatar

Worse yet, we can find someone else that can go 4-8. There was no attempt ever to extend Skenes, so this is how we are going to build a team around him when we have him?

The best part of this game was the radio telecast that I caught for an inning or so. Pirates have a play-by-play announcer I haven't heard before, along with Walk doing color. Anyone know who is this guy? Really talented delivery, voice, and knows baseball.....just smooth as silk! Who is this guy?

I listened to Dan Plesac on the White Sox broacast. He was entertaining talking about the different lingo in Pittsburgh which began with Yinzers. He said when he was a player in Pittsburgh and he asked a local for the nearest grocery store and the local told him it was Jon Eggle. Later he found it was Giant Eagle.

TBH, Nutting moving the Pirates to Nashville and Pittsburgh getting an expansion team might not be the worst thing that has happened to baseball in Pittsburgh.

What is more, if I were in Nashville, I would insist on an expansion team rather than having Nutting bring his circus to town.
