Overview
The Pirates drafted McMillan as a senior from Alabama. He started for two years there, posting an ERA of 4.49 and WHIP of 1.25. He had good control but didn’t run up a high strikeout rate. He missed the early part of his senior year with a muscle strain. Prior to his time at Alabama, McMillan pitched for Shelton State CC. McMillan throws the standard four pitches. He goes heavily with his fastball, which sits around 91-93 mph and appears to be his most effective pitch. He mixes in the other three without seeming to prefer one over the others.
2023-25
McMillan pitched once in the FCL after signing. He retired only one of the five batters he faced. In 2024, he spent most of the season in the Bradenton bullpen. He started off slowly, with opponents putting up a 1.083 OPS against him in April and .763 in May. In each month after that the figure was under .600. He finished with a 2.92 ERA for the Marauders, as well as a 1.28 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 9.7 K/9. The Pirates promoted McMillan to Greensboro in mid-August and he dominated there over seven games, including three starts. In 21 innings, he gave up just 16 hits and four walks, and fanned 28.
In 2025, McMillan opened the season back in Greensboro and dominated over six starts. In 29 innings, he gave up just five runs on 20 hits and three walks, and fanned 29. The Pirates promoted him to Altoona, but he got hurt after four starts and missed the rest of the season. The nature of the injury isn’t known. McMillan gave up just four earned runs in his first 15 innings in AA, then five in his last four innings, so it’s possible something occurred in that last start.
