The Pittsburgh Pirates have heavily invested in pitching prospects and have one of the deepest groups in baseball.

That allowed them to give up two young pitchers at last year’s deadline (Quinn Priester and Patrick Reilly) in exchange for a couple of hitting prospects (Nick Yorke and Billy Cook).

It also allowed them to trade an established major league pitcher (Luis Ortiz) and two more pitching prospects (Michael Kennedy and Josh Hartle) to get Spencer Horwitz, a first baseman with control, coming off a strong season with Toronto.

That’s five pitchers they’ve moved since July, four of which are prospects.

Pittsburgh could move another pitcher or two before the effects are felt throughout the system, but losing four arguably top-30 prospects is still going to be noticeable, regardless.

*Note: Outside of the first player, this list isn’t in any particular order when it comes to ‘ranking’ any of them in the system. A tier five player could end up ahead of a tier two to three prospect in our final list for the site.
