Overview

Garcia, nicknamed “The Password,” is a muscular outfielder with good power and swing-and-miss risk. He’s considerably bigger than his listed weight of 163. In the low minors, he didn’t hit for average, but he’s done better as he’s moved up. When he makes contact he puts up high exit velocities. Still, the strikeouts have been high as he tends to chase and doesn’t walk a great deal. He’s had moderate platoon splits in the upper minors, but he has hit RHPs well. In the minors, Garcia has primarily played center, but at least some scouts think he’ll eventually settle in a corner. He has about average speed and good range. His arm is above average. The Pirates obtained Garcia from Boston in a five-player trade, with Johan Oviedo as the main player going the other way. At the time of the trade, Garcia ranked 76th on Baseball America’s list of the top 100 prospects in baseball, as well as in the top 100 on other lists.

2020-23

The Red Sox signed Garcia in 2019, but he didn’t play during the pandemic season. He hit well with good power in his 2021 debut in the DSL, putting up a .905 OPS with one more walk than strikeouts. The next two years, he didn’t fare as well in US ball, although he continued to show some power. In rookie ball in 2022, he hit 188/328/366, with strikeouts in nearly a third of his plate appearances. Boston jumped him up to low A in 2023 and he hit 230/329/374 with a little lower K rate.

2024-25

Garcia had a breakout season in 2024. Initially, the Sox returned him to low A and he had an .882 OPS in 24 games. Promoted to high A, over 53 games, he hit 311/371/627 with 16 home runs. Garcia’s last 30 games came in AA, where he hit 263/320/386. On the year, Garcia had 23 home runs and cut his K rate to one every four and a half plate appearances. Boston added him to its 40-man roster after the season.

In 2025, the Sox sent Garcia back to AA, where he continued to show only modest power. He batted 256/355/393 with three home runs in 33 games. He moved up to AAA anyway and the power came back, with Garcia batting 271/334/498. He had 18 home runs in 83 games, giving him 21 on the year. His K rate went up to 27%. He also made his major league debut, getting a hit and two walks in nine plate appearances.

The Pirates obtained Garcia and rookie-level pitcher Jesus Travieso for Johan Oviedo, reliever Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman.
