Overview

The Giants gave Luciano a large bonus as a shortstop with significant power potential. He produces impressive bat speed and exit velocities, and in the low minors made hard contact at a good rate. He has a strong arm, but as he filled out his speed dropped from good to below average. His defense drew increasing criticism as he moved up due to poor shortstop actions and he moved to left field in 2025. He’s played a little at second. Strikeouts also became more of a problem in the upper minors as Luciano may not be able to handle good velocity well. From 2019 through early 2025, Luciano ranked first or second (part of the time with Joey Bart) among the Giants’ prospects according to Baseball America. He also ranked among the top 20 in the minors in 2020-22. The Pirates obtained Luciano off waivers in December 2025.

2019-21

Luciano got off to a fast start, skipping the DSL and hitting 322/438/616. He had ten home runs in just 38 games, with a good walk rate and solid K rate. After missing 2020, he went to low A and in 2021 hit 278/373/556 with 18 longballs in 70 games, again with a good walk rate and a passable K rate. The Giants moved him up to high A, where he struggled in 36 games, with a .577 OPS. His walk and K rates worsened significantly.

2022-25

The Giants kept Luciano in high A in 2022, although he ended up missing over two months with a back injury. He got into 57 games, not counting rehab, and rebounded somewhat to 263/339/459. He walked a bit more and his K rate dropped from 37% at the same level the previous year to 22%. San Francisco added him to the 40-man roster after the season.

After the 2022 season, Luciano suffered a stress fracture in his back that caused him to miss the early part of the 2023 season. When he was recovered he went to AA, where he continued to show some power but didn’t hit as well overall as previously. He hit 228/339/450, with an increased walk rate and a K rate of 30%. He had 11 home runs in 56 games there. The Giants promoted him to AAA in July and a little over a week later he made his major league debut. He went back and forth once more, getting into 18 games in AAA and 14 in the majors. Luciano had a .738 OPS in AAA and went 9-for-39 in the majors.

In 2024, the Giants sent Luciano back to AAA. He ended up playing only 27 games in the majors. In AAA, although he drew a lot of walks, he didn’t hit very well otherwise, posting a line of 250/380/380 in the Pacific Coast League, where the average was 268/356/442. His K rate was 27%. In the majors he had a .562 OPS, with five walks and 28 strikeouts in 83 plate appearances. He started playing second as well as short, starting 28 games at the former between the two locations.

Luciano spent all of 2025 in AAA and bounced back partially. He hit 23 home runs and had a line of 214/335/413. He drew a lot of walks, but his K rate was 31%. In the field, Luciano played left exclusively except for one game at first.

After the 2025 season, the Giants designated Luciano for assignment and the Pirates claimed him. Two weeks later the Pirates designated him for assignment.
