Scottsdale defeats Mesa, 10-6
Recap by John Dreker
Wednesday night's Arizona Fall League game for the Scottsdale Scorpions was the first time this fall that all four Pittsburgh Pirates position players were in the starting lineup. Second baseman Termarr Johnson was the lead-off hitter against the Mesa Solar Sox. Sammy Siani was in the cleanup spot and playing right field. Catcher Geovanny Planchart hit seventh, while third baseman Kervin Pichardo batted eighth. Brandan Bidois would join them out of the bullpen.
Johnson walked to begin the game. Siani came up with the bases loaded after each of the first three hitters walked. He got a run in (Johnson scored), though it came on a double-play grounder, so he didn't get an RBI.
Planchart, Pichardo, and Johnson all walked in the second inning to load the bases with Pirates. Pichardo and Planchart both scored on a single to make it a 4-0 game. Siani drew a walk to begin the third inning.
Bidois came in during the second inning. There was one out, two men in scoring position, and a 4-1 lead at the time. He struck out the first batter on six pitches. He got a fly ball to left field four pitches later to strand two inherited runners. Bidois remained on for the third inning. He walked the first batter, then allowed an infield single. The next three batters all struck out on a total of just 11 pitches. There was limited data available from Gameday for this game.
Bidois threw 29 pitches on Wednesday night, with 18 going for strikes. He finished with 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out four batters. He has given up seven runs over 5.2 innings this fall, with five hits, eight walks, and 11 strikeouts.
Planchart walked to begin the fourth inning. Pichardo grounded into a double play to immediately erase Planchart from the bases. Johnson popped out to start the fifth inning. After two walks and a wild pitch, Siani singled in two runs to make it a 6-2 game in the fifth. He then scored one batter later on a triple. Planchart walked in the fifth. Pichardo popped out to second base to end the fifth inning.
Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. He picked up his third stolen base of the fall, then scored on a double to make it a 9-3 game. Siani made it a 10-3 game on an RBI infield single. Planchart singled on a line drive to center field in the seventh. Pichardo followed with a swinging strikeout.
Johnson drew his third walk in the seventh. Siani struck out swinging in the eighth. Planchart grounded out to end the eighth inning. Pichardo and Johnson both struck out swinging in the ninth.
Johnson finished the day 0-for-3 with three walks. This could be his last game, as he's joining Team USA for the month of November. He's hitting .250/.444/.475 in 11 games this fall.
Siani ended up 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and three RBIs. He committed his first error of the season. He's batting .404/.451/.532 in 12 games.
Planchart went 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored. He now has a .364/.500/.682 slash line through seven games. He continued to have trouble throwing out runners, going 0-for-2 tonight in that area. He has thrown out one of 18 runners this season.
Pichardo posted an 0-for-4 night, with a walk and run scored. He currently has a .229/.341/.457 slash line over ten games.
Scottsdale won 10-6, moving them to a 7-12 record. Bidois secured the victory. The Scorpions have a Halloween home game with the Glendale Desert Dogs (11-8) starting at 4:30 PM EST.
