Morning Rundown: Aroldis Chapman signs with Red Sox, Antwone Kelly feature
Chapman signs with Red Sox, antwone Kelly 2024 season recap
Free-agent left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman has signed with the Boston Red Sox on a one-year deal worth $10.75 million.
Chapman, 36, pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, finishing the year as the team’s closer. He posted a 5-5 record with 15 saves, striking out 98 batters in 61.2 innings pitched with a 3.79 ERA (3.14 xFIP).
While there was no confirmation that the Pirates were actively pursuing Chapman, there is certainly a need for a left-handed reliever for the bullpen. Pittsburgh has just one left-handed reliever on the 40-man roster, Joey Wentz.
They have just two lefties on the 40-man overall, with Bailey Falter as the other.
Yesterday’s feature looked at right-handed pitching prospect Antwone Kelly, who pitched in Bradenton for the 2024 season. It was an up-and-down year for the righty, who missed some time with an injury.
