Hold on a minute.

ARE the Pirates interested in Grichuk? Or is somebody at a fan site saying so.

Reporting without attribution, guys. Come on.

As an editor, you have to put meat on an assertion for it to count. Somebody at FanSided is not someone from the Pirates. Do you have an agent who has said that the Pirates have shown interest? Has the player said something?

Who is FanSided and how do they know?

Good writers use attribution.

If it is someone saying they think that would be a good fit, WHO that person is and what their relevant experience IS matters. Otherwise, don't say "Pirates Interested In Randall Grichuk."

Unless I'm missing something here, or it is widely known that these FanSided sources know what's going on, this is misleading and poor journalism.

Nothing against you guys, bc I love you guys, but this is sloppy and not credible. The story needs some meat put on the bone.

Ok. I shall eat my hat here. I am humbled and embarrassed that I did not believe in the BoD or our beloved Pirates.

Bucs sign Grichuck. Mark Feinsand of mlb.com reported.

It was Robert Murray from that site, he's usually pretty accurate on breaking signings (example Perez to the ChiSox). He might be the only person on that network that puts out fairly reliable stuff.

surprised he hasn't been picked up by a bigger outlet.

Agreed Robert Murray is one of the good one’s …or at least has a good hit rate and is constantly woj—ing

somebody get wabbit a carrot, he's cranky.

You know, Bucs signed Grichuck to a one year deal.

I'm gonna have to eat some crow here, guys.

ChiSox sign Martin Perez. Fairly confident in projecting an ERA north of 5 there.

I’m sold on grichuk being a solid signing. Thats all

hell of a roller coaster career for that dude but I'll readily admit to missing the season he put up last year. Dang.

I even took a stroll through savant and damn near every bar there is solidly in the red. If someone more educated than I can find what he changed to know its real then that could be one hell of a bargain bin find

Athletic and SNY reporting that the Rays are unlikely to move Lowe or Diaz at this point. So two less options

Expand full comment

Sign both Verdugo and RG and platoon them with Palacios and Cook, move BRey to 1b, Horowitz to 2b, Nick to SS and IKF to back up the middle infielders. It’s still a shit team, but less shittier than last year. And yes I’m aware that moving that many players around is highly unlikely, not to mention signing AV and RG……

Expand full comment

I think a right or left field platoon of grichuk and Verdugo would actually be pretty good. Not sure about the rest but I am intrigued on moving Gonzales to SS

Expand full comment

That would be a $18-20 Million platoon……at that point go out and sign Profar for 3-$45 million.

I hear ya, him or Taylor Ward would be nice

In 2009, the Angels used their 2 first round picks by taking Randal Grichuk first followed by a player named Mike Trout. If that is the only variable we look at, Grichuk needs to get paid over 200 million through the year 2030. Anything less would be a bargain.

The Pirates are interested in lots of people....but look for the 34 - 36 year old that had decent stats two or three seasons ago and you will find the player that they will sign on the cheap, looking for the bounce back year....

Your description is sort of an amalgam of Grichuk and Verdugo which I find hilarious

Expand full comment

Actually, I follow the DBacks to a certain degree and Grichuk was solid but used primarily on his strong platoon side. Grichuk had not decent but good stats not a couple years ago but this past season. Verdugo, on the other hand, fits your description more. I'd be in on a Grichuk signing. Too bad Joc Pederson was signed by the Rangers. Grichuk and Pederson made a huge difference for that offense in AZ. Also too bad the MLBPA isn't after the Bucs as much as the A's.

Expand full comment

Correct. He had a career year being utilized primarily on his strong side of the platoon…anyone trust Sheltie to do that in Pittsburgh?

Expand full comment

And don’t get me wrong Grichuk is a fine player and would be an improvement over what they ran out last year but I don’t think he appreciably different than Verdugo. They will both likely be around league average bats and play decent D, they are just variations on a theme.

Expand full comment

What's sad is that league average is a ton better than the last gazillion years in RF and at 1B.

No blank way we pay Grichuk 20 million for two years. He probably signs for a bit more, maybe one at 15 or two at 25. Thge Pirates do not offer that type of money. Is it getting close to trading Skenes. That's WHAT THEY DO.

Expand full comment

Grichuk seems like a good fit. But he declined a $6 million dollar mutual option so figure it will take something in the two year $20 million range to get him signed. This would be the biggest contract handed out to an outside free agent by Cherington in both years and dollar value. So probably not happening, even though no reason why it shouldn't or couldn't happen. The team should have the ability to spend $30 to $40 million more on payroll this year at the least. But no sign they are going to spend even a half or a quarter of this.

Expand full comment

He does seem like a good option as he can be the right side platoon but not totally crater against RH pitching if need be. His numbers were good last year, however he only had about 250 ABs. No way he parlays that into 2/$20m, maybe something around his previous option price like 1/$7m or so.

Expand full comment

Pirates should pounce if they can sign him for that cheap. But I think it will cost more than that unless Randal remains unsigned by the time Spring Training begins.

Expand full comment

He will likely sign with a team that offers him the opportunity to play, and we all know Shelton’s propensity to play the veterans. Maybe the FO can make a solid case to him if he indeed has multiple offers, but I wouldn’t be wasting too much $$ on RF. They have other internal options that will likely yield similar results.

Expand full comment

I disagree. Getting a solid contributor to play RF should be the number one priority for this team. None of the internal options are established MLB players. Suwinksi was horrible last year in the majors and triple A. Palacios has never played a full season in the majors and may already be past his prime and Cook has had a cup of coffee in the majors with mixed results. Davis is another option but his D in RF was brutal and he still hasn't proven he can hit in the majors. If this team was still rebuilding then might as well see if one of these guys can become a contributor to the lineup. But this team should be aiming for the playoffs.
