Morning Rundown: Bryan Reynolds a Silver Slugger finalist, Pirates claim Trey Cabbage
Reynolds recognized for offensive season, Pirates make roster moves
The finalist for the Silver Slugger Award was announced on Monday, with Bryan Reynolds listed as one of four under the ‘utility’ position.
Reynolds, 29, hit .275/.344/.447 with 24 home runs, 88 RBI, and 73 runs scored while posting a 118 wRC+.
As far as the utility position, Reynolds played 118 games in left field, 22 in right, and 23 as the designated hitter.
He’ll compete with Luis Arraez (Padres), Mookie Betts (Dodgers), and Jake Burger (Marlins).
The Pirates claimed OF Trey Cabbage off waivers from the Houston Astros on Monday.
Cabbage played in 45 games with the Astros last year, batting .209 and striking out 37.4% of the time. He did have a 30/30 season in Triple-A back in 2023, so he offers an interesting power/speed combination but has always struggled with making contact.
According to FanGraphs he still has one option remaining, so he could be stashed in Triple-A as depth.
Some other roster moves announced by the Pirates on Monday:
RHP Dauri Moreta, RHP Johan Oviedo, RHP Hunter Stratton, and C Endy Rodriguez were all reinstated from the 60-day injured list
RHP Isaac Mattson, Daulton Jefferies, and Ben Heller were all removed from the 40-man roster after clearing through waivers
The option for 2025 was not picked up on Marco Gonzales and he is now a free agent.
Siani hits RBI single in Scottsdale loss
Recap by John Dreker
The Scottsdale Scorpions hosted the last-place Peoria Javelinas on Monday afternoon in Arizona Fall League action. Sammy Siani was the only Pittsburgh Pirates player in the starting lineup. He batted seventh and played right field. The only other Pirates player to see action was Kervin Pichardo, who came off the bench late in the game.
Siani flew out to center field during his first at-bat in the second inning. He then struck out swinging to end the fourth inning. Siani had a big at-bat in the sixth inning with Scottsdale trailing 3-0. He came up with two men on base and lined a one-run single to center field. With runners on the corners, he then picked up his third stolen base of the fall. Two walks brought home a run before Jett Williams struck out to end the inning with a 3-2 score.
Siani struck out swinging during a disastrous seventh inning. Scottsdale had a walk that was followed by two singles. A runner got thrown out at third base on the first single, then another runner got thrown out at home on the second single. Despite no double plays and three batters reaching base safely, the side was retired on four batters.
Pichardo got his brief chance to play in the bottom of the ninth inning. After a two-out walk, he came into the game as a pinch-runner, while representing the tying run. Pichardo didn't get a chance to move, as the next batter struck out to end the game.
Siani is now hitting .396/.467/.566 in 60 plate appearances over 14 games.
Scottsdale dropped to a 9-13 record. They will take on the Glendale Desert Dogs tonight. They are currently scheduled to finish the suspended game from Sunday, before playing the regularly scheduled game, which is listed as an 8:30 PM EST first pitch.

It looks as if Cherington stopped diving in dumpsters and looked in the cabbage patch.:)
Local boy makes good. Trey Cabbage is from Rutledge, TN, about 30 miles east of Knoxville. Remember back 30 years ago when Legion teams and other post-HS teams from around Pittsburgh would come down to Jefferson County, TN to play in tournaments where teams from all over the Eastern US would come in.
Two of the teams I remember well were the team from Highpoint/Butler/McCandless where Matt Clement (former Padre's/Cubs/Boston SP 1998-2006) came with his Father as the Manager, and the Team from Shaler coached by Frank Orga. Before moving to Tennessee, my boys grew up in the hotbed that was Shaler Baseball under HS Coach Jerry Matulevic. When we were growing up, Frank and I played for North Catholic and Jerry was the 2B on the Shaler Team. Jerry and I also played together on the Shaler Legion Team after HS.
