Morning Rundown: Dominic Perachi strikes out 11, FCL clinches playoff spot
Perachi has fantastic outing, FCL makes playoffs
Dominic Perachi continued his domination of the High-A level with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, pitching six innings of one-hit baseball while striking out 11.
It’s his sixth win of the season, lowering his High-A ERA to 1.97. He picked up 14 whiffs on the night and the 11 strikeouts is a career-high, and the second time he has reached double-digits professionally.
The left-handed Perachi has been strong lately, posting a 2.05 ERA in July while picking up two of his six wins in that span.
The offense, namely Jack Brannigan, came to play, giving him plenty of run support. Brannigan picked up three hits, including a double and home run. Seven of his 17 home runs this season have come in July.
With their win on Thursday, the FCL Pirates clinched a playoff spot. The semi-finals and finals will take place this weekend after a day off on Friday.
They just beat out the Red Sox and Rays teams, who played each other over the season's last two days. Splitting the previous two games allowed the Pirates to win the division outright without any tiebreakers.
The Pirates will face the Yankees on Saturday with a right to go to the finals, which will be played on Sunday. These two teams played each other last year, with the Yankees (who had Keiner Delgado on their team) winning.
The Yankees’ final game was canceled due to rain, so they will be the home team because they have a better winning percentage.
Mike Burrows pitched his first Triple-A game in over a year, throwing four innings while striking out five batters.
He threw 60 pitches and was heavy on the fastball (24) and slider (20) while also mixing in the change-up (12) and curveball (4). The fastball was 93-95 while picking up just one whiff on 13 swings.
After easing through the first two innings, Burrows labored more in the final two frames but still worked around any trouble with minimal damage.
Aaron Shortridge followed up Burrows, throwing another four innings and striking out six while allowing just a hit and a walk.
He struggled with his control at times, but Carlson Reed tied a career-high when it comes to strikeouts with nine. The righty out of West Virginia got up to 96 mph with his fastball and got six whiffs on 18 swings (33%).
As usual, the secondary stuff was on point, picking up whiffs on 12 of 22 swings, with the slider leading the way (seven).
The Pirates came to terms with three more draft picks on Thursday. They have 11 of 21 total picks left to sign, three from the first 10 rounds.
Comp-A—RHP Levi Sterling ($2,511,400) got full slot value. He has a potential four-pitch mix, a very projectable 6’5” frame, and was one of the youngest pitchers available.
14th Round—OF Ian Farrow. He hit 21 home runs for Florida Gulf Coast University back in 2021.
15th Round—3B Ethan Lege. Led Ole Miss in several categories last year, including average and doubles.

Good for Skenes and Jones for making the FG list. Nice feather in the cap for the draft & dev team. Now, parlay that depth of pitching for a couple hitters.
Absolutely absurd to let Arozarena get away on a salary dump.
These guys are impossibly fucking cheap.
