Morning Rundown: FanGraphs top 100 lists, Marlins eye free agent shortstop
FanGraphs comes out with multiple top 100 list, Marlins talking to free agent shortstop
FanGraphs released two separate top 100 lists, their regular one and another using their ZiPS projections.
On their regular list, the Pirates had four players, all familiar names for the top 100 list.
10 Paul Skenes
37 Termarr Johnson
62 Jared Jones
64 Bubba Chandler
They didn’t seem too concerned about the whole Skenes ‘fastball shape,’ but they did mention he gets more whiffs on the arm side of the strike zone as opposed to at the top of the zone like most pitchers these days and relays the importance of the change-up since that’s the case.
Termarr was given a future value grade of ‘40’ for his hit tool, with a ‘60’ for both his in-game and raw power. When it comes to Jared Jones, they seemed pretty confident in him sticking in the rotation, where they commented about Bubba Chandler’s violent delivery that could lead to the bullpen.
That was once a concern of Jones, but he’s made adjustments where that isn’t as much of an issue.
The ZiPS list, on the other hand, has a few interesting placements and a new face in the top 100 lists when it comes to the Pirates.
25 Termarr Johnson
30 Paul Skenes
50 Anthony Solometo
62 Michael Kennedy
98 Bubba Chandler
100 Thomas Harrington
The obvious thing is that Skenes is the 30th-ranked prospect and behind Johnson. Kennedy made his debut on a top 100 list and came in at 62.
Chandler and Harrington round out the Pirates to make the top 100, giving them six total players - tied for the most by any team. Another thing of note, Jones wasn’t in the top 100 here, where he’s been in most other list.
ZiPS went even further, as the Pirates had 10 in their top 200 and 24 in the top 500. The 24 is tied for the most among all organizations.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Marlins made an offer to free-agent shortstop Tim Anderson.
After establishing himself as one of the best shortstops in baseball, things quickly went downhill for Anderson last year, and eventually his option for this upcoming season declined.
The Pirates, of course, have been rumored to be discussing a trade with the Marlins for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. One of their areas of need was shortstop, but that no longer would be the case if they signed Anderson.
First Base is boring as Tellez is the only true 1B. Who else will play there? Joe? Triolo? Grandal? So here is 1B and 3B.
First Baseman
Rowdy Tellez…………100%
.
Third Basemen
Ke’Bryan Hayes……..100%
Jared Triolo……………100%
Jake Lamb………………..5%
Joe Perez………………….5%
Jack Branigan……………0%
.
Tellez and Hayes are locks. I believe Triolo is a lock with his talent and versatility. Lamb and Perez would likely need multiple injuries in front of them coupled with a very strong spring.
Anyone take a look at the 2024 draft write ups from FG? Pretty ordinary class and certainly better to not be at the top in 2024.
