Morning Rundown: Jared Jones strikes out six in 3+ innings pitched
Pirates beat Phillies as Jared Jones strikes out six
The Pittsburgh Pirates have now won three in a row, erasing their losing streak of the same amount earlier in the week, after beating the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 on Friday.
Jared Jones pitched into the fourth inning, striking out six batters while allowing a run on two hits and a walk. He threw 67 pitches on the night, topping out at 98.9 mph with his fastball.
He continued his focus on the change-up, throwing it seven times (the third most behind his four-seam and slider), getting two whiffs on four swings.
Yohan Ramirez pitched the rest of the fourth innings, and Dennis Santana along with Carson Fulmer pitched shutout frames. Tanner Rainey allowed an earned run on a hit and walk while striking out two and Eddy Yean pitched the final two innings, picking up the save—his second of the spring.
Ji Hwan Bae registered another multi-hit game, going 2-2 with a run. Nick Gonzales, Joey Bart, and Adam Frazier picked up RBI hits. Matt Gorski recorded the only extra-base hit on the day for the Pirates, a double with a .020 expected batting average.
Mike Burrows will start the next game for the Pirates, facing the Atlanta Braves and Spencer Schwellenbach. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm ET. There is no statcast for the game, but there will be a stream on MLB TV.
According to the transaction log, the Pirates released right-handed pitcher Luigi Hernandez on Friday. He had 162 strikeouts across 130 innings pitched, throwing in the DSL, FCL, and Bradenton since 2021. He also walked 107 batters and posted a 6.16 ERA.

Luigi Hernandez had an interesting story from when I tried to get info on him. It seemed like there was a 50/50 split between people who really liked him and those who didn't think he was worth signing even at a lower bonus price. Probably the biggest internal split of opinions that I have come across.
Oy.
This is getting fun. Just hoping the joy of it translates over into the long season.
Looks from the game the other day for me: Jones looked good, of course, but there were times when I thought he might have been overthrowing? I'll depend on the guys who know better around here.
The Eddy Yean Cartel deserves a fan club.
Very interested that guys like Bae, Peggy, Tank, Gorski and some others are bringing game. It makes me wonder if being so patient with them is going to pay off in the bigs. Peggy still young. Bae could be a real problem on the bases. Tank / Gorski are showing they want in.
Tank was solid receiving. Maybe because he's comfortable on the field his bat will now naturally follow.
Good things.
