Morning Rundown: Jun-Seok Shim Returns, Recapping Busy Day Of Roster Moves
The Pirates top international pitching signing made his return to the mound on the same day as multiple roster moves throughout the system
It was 52 days since the last time Jun-Seok Shim stepped foot on the mound in a FCL game, just two games into his professional career.
On June 10 he pitched four perfect innings, striking out eight, for his debut. He left his second game a week later after just 1.1 innings and hadn’t pitched since then until Tuesday.
Shim pitched 1.2 innings on Tuesday, allowing a hit and a walk along with two earned runs while striking out two batters.
The righty was an interesting get for the Pirates during the International signing period, and was thought to be an advanced arm for his age. Obviously missing this much time is a big set back, but there’s still a chance for him to end the season on a strong note.
There was plenty of movement within the system, including a few more 2023 draft picks getting assigned to affiliated ball.
Major Leagues
Colin Selby and Thomas Hatch were both promoted to the major league club, the former of which will be making his MLB debut once he appears in a game. Hatch was recently claimed off of waivers.
Triple-A Indianapolis Indians
To make room for Selby and Hatch, Yerry De Los Santos and Osvaldo Bido were optioned to Triple-A. De Los Santos was have a strong season out of the bullpen, and Bido showed flashes as a starter, but still fits better as a reliever down the road.
Malcom Nunez was activated by the Indians after finishing up his rehab assignment. He hasn’t played for Indianapolis since May 24. Also joining him in Indy will be Roansy Contreras, who last pitched for Bradenton.
Double-A Altoona Curve
On the Double-A side of things, Tahnaj Thomas was taken off the inactive list, where he had been since August 4. He takes Anthony Solometo’s roster spot, who was placed on the Development List in what was likely a paper move to monitor his innings down the stretch.
High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers
Moving up from Bradenton will be left-handed reliever Julian Bosnic. In 27 games out of the bullpen in Single-A, Bosnic struck out 60 batters in 45.2 innings while posting a 4.34 ERA.
Moving down from Indianapolis back to Greensboro are infielders Francisco Acuna and Brenden Dixon.
Single-A Bradenton Marauders
Three recent draft picks by the Pirates join the Marauders on the road in Fort Myers - Jaden Woods, Patrick Reilly and Kalae Harrison. Woods was a player that some believed could be a borderline first round pick in the draft depending on how his season played out.
He struggled and was available in the middle rounds for the Pirates.
Landon Tomkins was also reactivated for the Marauders. He’s pitched three for the Marauders already, getting into the game on Tuesday as well.
Reilly also pitched and made his debut, going two-thirds of an innings, striking out two and allowing three runs on one hit and two walks.
Harrison started at second base and went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts.
FCL Pirates
19th round pick Tyler Kennedy was assigned to the Complex League team, and made his debut on Tuesday. He pitched an inning, struck out two but allowed two hits and a run while being tagged with the loss.

McA-DOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
The original plan for Shim was to move to Bradenton after a handful of starts. His injury was minor, but he had to completely stop throwing for a short time. So then was a cautious reset to get him back into throwing, followed by him pitching on the side to get to the point of being able to go back out for a second inning in this game. My guess is if he finishes the FCL schedule healthy in two weeks, he finishes at Bradenton still.
