Morning Rundown: Marco Gonzales placed on Injured List, Andrew McCutchen hits 300th career home run
The Pirates are now down a starting pitcher, and Andrew McCutchen reaches milestone.
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have placed left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales on the 15-day injured list.
This comes after his latest start, where he allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Gonzales had a 2.65 ERA in three starts, striking out 11 batters across 17 innings pitched.
In his place, the Pirates have recalled Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis. This will give the Pirates an extra reliever until Gonzales’ spot in the rotation comes back up.
Ryan made the team out of camp and pitched pretty well out of the bullpen. He picked up his first major league win in the Marlins series and has two holds in four games pitched with the Pirates.
There hasn’t been any official work on who would fill Gonzales’ spot in the rotation while he is out, but Quinn Priester is already on the 40-man roster, and his following scheduled start lines up well.
With his first of the season, Andrew McCutchen has now joined the 300-home run club.
Coming in the ninth inning of a blowout win against the Philadelphia Phillies, McCutchen went deep against Ricardo Pinto.
The home run is the 216th of his career with the Pirates, with whom he was drafted and spent the first 9+ years of his career, including an MVP in 2013.
He hadn’t had the best start to the season, as he was just 5-31 entering Sunday’s game.
Regardless, that start mattered little since it meant watching one of the most popular athletes in Pittsburgh sports history hit this milestone in a Pirates’ uniform.

The offense was also able to weather the storm that was Zack Wheeler, who had 10 strikeouts in the first five innings before falling off in the sixth. Jack Suwinski hit a grand slam to open things up.
The win means the Pirates salvaged a series split against the Phillies and will now head to New York to face the Mets.

probably worth bumping a couple more starts per week to Joey Bart at this point, right?
Awfully rough go of it for Solometo and Ashcraft to start the season.
Says something about the strength of the system when such a thing completely goes unnoticed.
