Morning Rundown: Martin Perez begins rehab assignment, Charles McAdoo homers in Altoona debut
Martin Perez for Indianapolis, Charles McAdoo plays in first Double-A game.
Martin Perez began his rehab assignment in Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. He threw 63 pitches across five innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four.
He primarily used the sinker and change-up while mixing in the cutter after that. All three of those pitches were used double-digit amount of times, and he also mixed in the curveball and four-seam fastball (according to statcast).
The 33-year-old Perez hasn’t pitched for the Pirates since May 26 and has a 1-3 record, with a 4.71 ERA across 57.1 innings pitched.
After posting a 2.86 ERA through the end of April, May saw it balloon up. In the five games before getting hurt in May, Perez had an ERA of 7.54.
Charles McAdoo didn’t take long to make an impact at the Double-A level. Playing on the road against the Bowie Baysox, McAdoo picked up a double, home run, and walk while driving in two as the Curve won in extra-innings.
After 60 strong games in High-A, McAdoo was promoted to Altoona heading into the weekend. The home run on Saturday now gives him double-digits in that and stolen bases.
He is now batting .339/.418/.517 with 10 home runs, 54 RBI, and 14 stolen bases on 17 attempts.
Behind a Oneil Cruz home run and seven strong innings for Jared Jones, the Pittsburgh Pirates tied up their weekend series at one game a piece.
Jones (5-6) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Colin Holderman and Aroldis Chapman combined to close the game out.
Five players picked up hits, including the first four batters of the lineup.
The Pirates will try to win the series on Sunday with Paul Skenes on the mound. They have won four of their last five series, with the only loss coming at St. Louis.

Great story in the PG this morning about Holderman and his dedication to his sister and, on her behalf, raising awareness and money for Angelman syndrome.

37 down. 44 to go.

Pirates win 4-3 on a day behind one third of The Allegheny Electric Company. J. Jones went 7 innings after a first inning that clearly struck fear into the hearts of the Rays. O’Cruz whacked one into the river. And The Bullpen did what The Bullpen is supposed to do. The Bucs are in third place, 6.5 games behind the first place Brewers and one game ahead of the last place Reds in the Logjam Central.

CARROTS ON THE HOUSE!!!!!
@>O’Cruz for that long bomb. Only the sixth player to hit one into the drink on the fly!
@>@>The Bullpen, accepting for the Gas Company will be ChapMan, who moves up into a tie with HodorMan. Not sure why Bednar was unavailable, but his turn is coming soon, methinks.
@>@>@>J. Jones for a gutty 7 innings and a quality start.
