Morning Rundown: Matt Gorski, Mike Burrows joing the Pirates on road trip
Suwinski optioned to AAA, Justin Lawrence to IL
The Pittsburgh Pirates made several roster moves before their Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Jack Suwinski was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. After making the team out of camp, Suwinski has struggled in the regular season. He was just 5-for-39 with 19 strikeouts and one extra base hit when he was optioned. He also had an OPS of under .400.
To take his place in the outfield, the Pirates selected the contract of Matt Gorski. A draft pick under the Neal Huntington era, Gorski has hit at least 20 home runs in the minors from 2022-2024, also posting 20 steals in two of them.
Gorski, 27, was hitting .300/.325/.529 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 18 games with Triple-A Indianapolis at the time of his promotion.
Left-handed reliever Tim Mayza was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Gorski.
Justin Lawrence was also placed on the injured list. He had an ERA under one in over 11 innings pitched this season out of the bullpen.
He will be replaced on the roster by Mike Burrows, who will pitch out of the bullpen.
Speaking of Gorski, he began his major league career in about as good a fashion as you could hope for.
He launched a solo home run in his first at-bat, which traveled 434 feet and 115.2 mph off the bat. The 27-year-old Gorski went 1-4 with a strikeout and an error in the field on the night.
Altoona Curve transferred C Wyatt Hendrie to the Development List

watching Oniel truly break out has been the highlight of the season.
Boy Omar Alfonzo really is the perfect moneyball type hitter. Lifetime walk ratio > 20% + enuff power and he is trending better YOY. Maybe Altoona-proof. Hope he’s a real catcher defensively
