Morning Rundown: Mets come from behind, Guardians kick things off with commanding win
Divisional Series begins with four games on Saturday
The Divisional series round kicked off on Saturday with four games being played. Things kicked off with the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians series.
After a brief layoff, Cleveland showed no signs of rust, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 7-0 victory.
Lane Thomas hit a three-run home run, fueling the first-inning outburst. Six Guardians picked up hits, with David Fry the only one with multiple base hits. Tanner Bibee pitched 4.2 shutout innings, giving way to Cade Smith, who ended up with the win.
The usual solid Philadelphia Phillies bullpen imploded after Zack Wheeler tossed a magnificent seven shutout innings. He generated 30 whiffs on his way to striking out nine batters.
But the Mets scored six runs in the final two innings and now are up 1-0 in the best-of-five series.
In a wild, back-and-forth game, the Yankees strike last and pick up a win in game one, 6-5, over the Kansas City Royals. Juan Soto picked up three hits, Gleyber Torres hit a home run, and Austin Wells drove in a pair for the Yankees’ offense.
MJ Melendez hit a two-run home run off Gerrit Cole in the fourth inning. Garrett Hampson had a pinch-hit, two-run single for the Royals.
After the Padres scored three runs in the top of the first inning, Shohei Ohtani immediately tied it with a three-run home run in the second.
Xander Bogaerts doubled home two to give the Padres the lead again in the third, but once again, the Dodgers answered the following inning.
Teoscar Hernandez singled home Ohtani and Mookie Betts, giving the Dodgers a lead they would never surrender.
There are just two games on Sunday, both on the National League side. The Mets and Phillies play at 4:08 pm ET, with the Dodgers/Padres at 8:03 pm ET. Both games can be seen on FS1.

Tough day for all 4 teams I’m rooting for to win yesterday. Of the 4, I think the Phillies have the most to be concerned with. Mets confidence level is through the roof and headed even higher after yet another improbable win.
