Morning Rundown: Michael King strikes out 12, Royals shutout Orioles, Tatis homers
Recap of the Wild Card round day one
The road teams won three of the four Wild Card games on the first day of the playoffs Tuesday.
Tarik Skubal pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out six in helping the Detroit Tigers take a 1-0 series lead against the Houston Astros.
Behind six shutout innings from Cole Ragans, the Royals stole game one of their series against the Baltimore Orioles. Ragans, acquired in the Aroldis Chapman deal a year ago, struck out eight and needed just 80 pitches to get through his outing.
Bobby Witt Jr. went 1-4 and drove in the game’s only run in the sixth inning. Corbin Burnes pitched eight innings for the Orioles, allowing one run on five hits and one walk.
After allowing two runs in the first inning, the Mets scored eight of the next 10 runs, winning game one 8-4 against the Brewers. Luis Severino allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks over six innings, picking up the win for the Mets.
Mark Vientos went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Brice Turang went 3-5 with two runs for the Brewers.
The Padres jumped on AJ Smith-Shawver early, led by a Fernando Tatis Jr. home run, as they ended up being the only home team to win on the day, defeating the Braves 4-0.
Michael King has one for the storybooks, joining Logan Webb and Jake Arrieta as the only pitchers to strikeout 10 and walk none in his first postseason start. He punched out a total of 12 batters in seven shutout innings for the Padres.

I have to say, baseball seems a bit unimportant in light of what's going on in the Carolinas and E TN as well as the whole Middle East thing. At the same time, it's too bad the regular season is over since it could provide a little distraction from all that. Pray for those Appalachia folks. The devastation is horrible. The media will stop covering this in order to get attention and continue dividing the country but these poor folks are just trying to survive right now. Imagine just trying to get water for your family!
