Mike Burrows made his first major league start on Thursday, striking out three over five innings while allowing four runs on four hits and two walks.
He threw 77 pitches, 49 of which were for strikes. Over 30% of his pitches were change-ups, where he got whiffs on eight of 17 swings.
The Pirates lost the series opener against the Brewers, 8-5. Their streak of not scoring more than four runs officially ends at 26 games.
Spencer Horwitz had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the ninth to plate their fifth run of the game. He went 2-5 with a solo home run, his first as a Pirate. Oneil Cruz went 1-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two walks.
Paul Skenes will get the nod for the Pirates on Friday, facing Freddy Peralta of the Brewers.

KC just released Refroe. His contract this year pays him $7.5M. No, I’m not advocating the Pirates sign him. And, no, I won’t point out that his stats look similar to Pham’s this year…
I wasn’t sure if this was highlighted anywhere yesterday, but I found it interesting. In his mailbag, Hiles stated that he recently learned BC tried to trade Bednar before, but couldn’t due to ownership stepping in. He doesn’t specify when, though.
