Morning Rundown: Mike Burrows strikes out eight, Griffin has a three-hit night
Mike Burrows pitched a fantastic outing on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. In 5.1 innings, Burrows allowed one run on five hits while striking out a career-high eight batters.
It wasn’t enough as the Pirates managed just one run on five hits. The lone run came on an Andrew McCutchen solo home run in the first inning.
McCutchen and Nick Gonzales each picked up multiple hits on the day. Braxton Ashcraft pitched two shutout innings in the seventh and eighth.
The Pirates have the chance to split the series on Sunday, with Mitch Keller on the mound.
Konnor Griffin’s torrid start to his time at High-A continued on Saturday, as the 2024 first-round pick registered three more hits, including his first home run with the Grasshoppers. He also stole a pair of bases and drew a walk.
That gives Griffin 10 hits and five stolen bases in five games this week.
