Morning Rundown: Pete Alonso's late home run fuels come brom behind win for the Mets, Divisional matchups set
Mets rally, end up in Divisional Series
With his days with the New York Mets potentially numbered, Pete Alonso did his best to extend it at least a little further.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the ninth, with two outs left in their season, Alonso hit a three-run, go-ahead home run against Devin Williams. Starling Marte singled to score Jesse Winker, making it 4-2, which they held on to despite allowing a Sal Frelick single to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Milwaukee originally took the lead with back-to-back home runs from Jake Bauers and Frelick. Tobias Myers pitched five shutout innings, striking out five while allowing just two hits.
Jose Quintana pitched six shutout innings for the Mets, with Edwin Diaz eventually getting the win after tossing 1.2 frames.
The win for the Mets set up a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies in the Divisional round.
All four series kicks off on Saturday, with an off day on Friday.
With the Mets winning, all four Divisional Round are set and ready to go for Saturday. The matchups are as follows:
Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians, 1:08 pm ET
New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies, 4:08 pm ET

Mark Feinsand reported Thursday night that the Cincinnati Reds will hire Terry Francona for their managerial vacancy.
Francona has a career record of 1950-1672 as a manager. His last stint was with the Cleveland Guardians, who finished 76-86 in 2023.

Absolutely brutal for the Brewers! How many relievers in the world would you rather have in that spot than Williams?
There's so much parity in the game right now, most in what, 30 years?
Nice move by Cincinnati.
