Morning Rundown: Pirates blown out in Fort Myers, Carter Bins retired
Pirates lost 15-3, return in Tyler Anderson trade retires
The Pittsburgh Pirates were blown out on the road against the Minnesota Twins, losing 15-3.
Jared Jones threw 64 pitches across 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks, striking out four. He threw all five pitches at least four times, getting a whiff on each except his curveball.
Jack Carey and David Bednar combined to allow nine earned runs over an inning total (Carey 0.2, Bednar 0.1). Joey Wentz allowed four runs, but only one was earned. Jared Triolo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa had errors.
Offensively, the Pirates combined for six hits with the two biggest coming from late-game replacements.
Darick Hall and Matt Gorski hit home runs, their second and fourth of the spring respectively.
The Pirates play a night game at home against the Detroit Tigers, with Andrew Heaney expected to make his third appearance of spring. Keider Montero is scheduled for the Tigers with an expected start time of 6:05 pm ET.
Today is the Pirates' Spring Breakout game. They will face the Phillies prospects at 1:05 pm ET in Clearwater.
Last year’s edition featured Paul Skenes facing off against another former first overall pick, Jackson Holiday.
This year will feature names like Bubba Chandler, Hunter Barco, and Konnor Griffin. I gave a full breakdown of the roster, plus some names to watch on the Phillies side here:
The game will be featured on MLB TV, and if you look very closely, I’m sure you will catch a glimpse of me somewhere behind home plate.
Carter Bins, who the Pirates acquired in the Tyler Anderson trade, has retired. After originally showing some progress, Bins was never able to make an impact with the bat, and struggled defensively.
He’ll finish his minor league career with a batting line of .210/.334/.372, with 37 home runs in 314 games.

Blown out! A very nice start by Jared Jones, 4.1 IP, 3 Hits, 2BB/4K, 1 ER, and then Jack Carey and David Bednar combined for an inning of 8 hits, 3 BB, and 9 earned runs. It continued, and reached 15-0 before HR's by Hall and Gorski in the 9th and we finished just a slight bit more respectable at 15-3.
Are the Twins that strong, or were the Pirates (except Jones) just that flat? Hard not to have doubts about Bednar. IKF posted his 3rd error of ST, but hard to maintain intensity in a blowout like last night. Other personnel fighting to make the 26 - Suwinski 0-2 with a BB, 0 K; Frazier 1-3, 0 K; Davis 0-3, 1K; Gorski 1-1, HR. Don't know how they can avoid putting Frazier on the Active Roster, but that's going to cost a more deserving young player a shot.
It appears Bednar is still trying to get on track after missing spring training…. Last year
