Morning Rundown: Pirates comeback and win in extra innings, Indianapolis roster set, roster moves on Opening Day
Pirates come from behind, win in extra innings. Triple-A Indianapolis' roster is announce and the Pirates finalize their roster.
The Pittsburgh Pirates chipped and clawed their way back to win their Opening Day matchup in extra-innings against the Miami Marlins 6-5.
Mitch Keller put himself in some bad situations, the defense didn’t help early on, but was able to work around things to keep the game from getting out of hand. He finished the day allowing four earned runs (five total) on seven hits and two walks while striking out three across 5.2 innings pitched.
The offense slowly chipped back, scoring four unanswered runs to eventually win the game. Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run home run in the top of the third, originally tying the game at two.
Edward Olivares hit a pinch-hit home run in his first plate appearance as a Pirates. Oneil Cruz also went deep, as the Pirates continued their home run onslaught after leading all teams in Spring Training.
Six relievers combined to pitch a shutout the rest of the way, which didn’t include David Bednar. Jose Hernandez pitched the final inning and picked up his first career save.
Game two of the four game series will start at 7:10 pm ET, with Martin Perez expected to face AJ Puk.
