Morning Rundown: Pirates complete sweep of Marlins, Nick Yorke four-hit day, Endy Rodriguez double
Pirates complete season and series sweep of the Marlins, Yorke has a big day at the plate, Endy Rodriguez hits a double
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates completed the series and season sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 3-1 victory.
Oneil Cruz, Connor Joe, and Jared Triolo drove in runs for the Pirates, who have now won five of seven games. They now sit with a 70-76 record, with 16 games left in the season.
Triolo hit his eighth home run of the season, with Bryan Reynolds picking up a pair of doubles.
Bailey Falter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, finishing with 7.1 shutout frames. Colin Holderman, David Bednar, and Jalen Beeks rounded things out to secure the victory.
Bednar had an opportunity to get the save but couldn’t close it out. He got to a two-strike, two-out situation, but Cristian Pache was able to hit one up the middle, which ended Bednar’s day.
After an off-day on Thursday, the Pirates will start a weekend series against the Kansas City Royals. They have just six more home games left on the schedule.
Thomas Harrington was efficient again, allowing him to pitch nearly seven full innings. He allowed two hits and a walk (along with two runs) in the first inning but then went 5.2 shutout frames, allowing just a hit and a walk the rest of the way.
He threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes. His record now improves to 4-1 with Indianapolis, averaging nearly six innings per outing since getting promoted to Triple-A.
Nick Yorke had a huge game, going 4-4 and finishing a triple short of the cycle. In his first at-bat, he ripped a double to the right-center gap. He also turned on a pitch to hit a home run in one of the deepest parts of the field.
The Altoona Curve scored four runs in the first inning but still needed a late rally to secure the victory.
Tsung-Che Cheng picked up three hits, one a double, and drove in three runs. Four hitters on the Curve lineup registered multi-hit games.
Dominic Perachi struck out seven batters in five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk.
Cristofer Melendez pitched in his first game since August 18, 2022, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three in 1.1 innings.

Here’s an interesting pair of factoids:
Pirates starters are 5th in MLB in win probability added, well ahead of 6th place Houston.
The bullpen is 27th.
So Friday we get to see what an actual rebuild looks like.
