Pirates lose 10-2, Hunter Stratton has ruptured patella tendon, Dotel strikes out 10
The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t make it three in a row, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 10-2 on the night they inducted three new members to their Hall of Fame.
After a couple of encouraging outings to begin his Pirates career, things have gone off the rails for Jake Woodford, as he allowed seven earned runs (eight total) in 3.1 innings pitched, getting his sixth loss of the season and ballooning his ERA even more (8.01).
Rowdy Tellez hit his 11th home run, and Oneil Cruz picked up his 29th double, which was the highlights offensively on the night.
Adding even more to a rough night, Hunter Stratton left the game with an injury after stumbling while trying to cover home. He was taken off on a cart, and it was later announced he had sustained a left knee patella tendon rupture.
The Pirates still have a chance to take three of four against the Reds with a day game on Sunday. Luis Ortiz will pitch and face Nick Martinez of the Reds.
The final stat line wasn’t pretty, but Wilber Dotel struck out a career-high 10 batters in Greensboro’s win over the Asheville Tourists on Saturday.
Four of the five runs he allowed came in the fifth inning, which he had to labor. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out double digits hitters for the first time in his career.
Getting to complete the five innings also secured his ninth win of the season. According to the broadcast, he got a strikeout with a fastball that reportedly topped 98 mph.
Omar Alfonzo and Mitch Jebb hit doubles for the Grasshoppers. Lonnie White Jr., Hudson Head, and Shawn Ross all hit homers, paving the way for the offense to score 10 runs.
They were also aggressive on the basepaths, as Jebb (2) and Termarr Johnson (3) each stole multiple bases.
On Saturday, the Bradenton Marauders swept both games of a doubleheader against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.
Javier Rivas hit his 19th double and 12th home run in a game, and Esmerlyn Valdez also went deep.
Antwone Kelly returned from the injured list, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Duce Gourson had his first three-hit game in game two, mixing in a double while driving in a pair of runs. Clevari Tejada couldn’t quite pitch enough to qualify for the win, leaving with the bases loaded one out short of completing five innings.
Hunter Furtado came in and got a strikeout to end the inning and pitched the sixth to get the win.
Jack Suwinski picked up two hits—a double and a home run—but it wasn’t enough as the Indianapolis Indians lost to the Columbus Clippers 6-3. He’s struggled in Triple-A but has five hits in 16 at-bats (.312) this week against Columbus.
Nick Yorke had another multi-hit game, his ninth since joining the Pirates’ organization and third in a row.

While reading Mackey's column about the team's ongoing problems with fundamentals, one in which he mentioned that we were 4th worst in K's, I was curious about how we ranked in other offensive categories. What jumped out was that we're the only team that is bottom 5 in K's and bottom 5 in ISO. Some teams that K a lot, like the Reds and Red Sox balance that with power. For example, the Reds are 5th worst in K's but 9th best in ISO, the Red Sox are 3rd worst in K's but 4th best in ISO. Granted, some of this would be due to their home parks. If misery loves company, though, then we can look at the Mariners who are worst in K% and only 22nd in ISO.
