Morning Rundown: Pirates make flurry of roster moves
First official day of offseason a busy one for the Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates got to business just a day after the Texas Rangers ended the season by winning the World Series.
It was announced that Vinny Capra, Alfonso Rivas, and Tucupita Marcano were claimed off of waivers by different teams. Cody Bolton was also traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations.
Capra was claimed by Milwaukee, Rivas by Cleveland, and Marcano will return to his original team, the San Diego Padres.
Also, Alex Stumpf of DK Pittsburgh Sports reported that Miguel Andujar, Angel Perdomo, and Yerry De Los Santos were all placed on waivers. He also mentioned that if Andujar goes unclaimed, he can elect free agency, which would make sense for someone in his position who finished the season strong in the majors.
Perdomo finished the season on the 60-day injured list for his elbow.
Not a bad first day for the Pirates’ front office, clearing out some of the clutter on the 40-man roster.
I’ll have a more in-depth breakdown of the implications of losing each player and what that could mean for the Pirates during the offseason after we figure out who of the next wave gets claimed.
After a quiet night from the Pirates prospects on Wednesday, they made up for it on Thursday.
Jack Brannigan and Jase Bowen went deep for the Salt River Rafters, driving in three of the five runs scored for the road team.
His third of the season, Brannigan hit a two-run shot in the top of the fifth, giving Salt River the lead 3-2. Bowen would later hit an inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning, giving Salt River back the lead after Scottsdale tied it in the seventh.
For Bowen, that was his fourth homer of the fall.
Cameron Junker started the sixth inning but walked a pair and was pulled after completing two-thirds of an inning.
Remember David Matoma, the kid from Uganda? BA has a piece on pitching metrics that puts him up front, basically raving about him. FB was sitting at 97 with excellent movement. Also a slider with above average spin. And he’s 17.
