Morning Rundown: Pirates on verge of season sweep against Marlins, Chandler has double-digits strikeouts, Greensboro lose
Pirates can complete season sweep of Marlins. Bubba Chandler strikes out 10. Greensboro loses game one of playoffs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are one game away from sweeping the season series against the Miami Marlins.
It was a collective effort from the bullpen, pitching from start to finish, as the Pirates used seven relievers in the victory.
Carmen Mlodzinski rolled through two innings, with Joey Wentz following up and getting the win.
Aroldis Chapman picked up his eighth save of the season.
Andrew McCutchen hit his 20th home run of the season, his eighth year hitting that total in a Pirates uniform. The only other player to do that is Willie Stargell.
The Pirates will have Bailey Falter on the mound as they go for the series and season sweep of the Marlins.
First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 pm ET.
Endy Rodriguez returned to affiliated ball for the first time since last season, playing for the Altoona Curve. He went 0-3 with a strikeout. He was also charged with a passed ball.
The Curve were defeated 6-2 in the first game of their final series of the season. Sammy Siani and Jase Bowen both picked up a pair of hits.
Bubba Chandler was fantastic again for the Indianapolis Indians. He struck out 10 in six innings, allowing just a hit and two walks.
He went the first 5.2 innings without allowing a base runner. A single and two walks later, he got the final out to complete the six shutout frames.
Liover Peguero finished just a home run shy of the cycle. Ji Hwan Bae hit his sixth home run at Triple-A. Five hitters in the lineup finished with multiple hit, and everyone had at least one.
The Greensboro Grasshoppers will have to win their next two games in order to advance to the next round of the playoffs after losing Tuesday night.
They struck out 17 times offensively, and only picked up four hits. Mitch Jebb had the only extra-base hit, a double.
On the pitching side of things, they struggled to throw strikes, issuing nine free passes, compared to striking out just eight Hudson Valley hitters.
Game two will be in Greensboro on Thursday, Wilber Dotel is the projected starter.
