Morning Rundown: Pirates sign international pitcher, JC Flowers pitches, Rangers take 3-1 lead
Pirates sign a 17 year old pitcher, quiet day in the AFL.
The Pittsburgh Pirates made another splash in the international market, signing right-handed pitch Victor Trejo to a minor league contract, according to the Pirates transaction page.
Danny Demilio of Pittsburgh Baseball Now brought it up on Twitter yesterday, but Ethan Hullihen posted a link from Baseball America a couple of weeks ago that announced it. As with almost every international signing, there isn’t much known except what is available on their player page.
Of course, those aren’t exactly reliable at times (the first example I can think of is Carlos Jimenez, still listed at 140 pounds), with MiLB.com having him at 6’0” currently, with no weight listed.
At 17 years old, Trejo will likely spend next year in the Dominican Summer League, where we may get more info by then on him.
Not much happening in the AFL when it comes to the Pirates. Jase Bowen and Carter Bins had the day off, leaving Jack Brannigan as the only hitter playing. He went 0-4 with a walk and strikeout, with his OPS now in danger of dipping below .600.
JC Flowers was the only other Pirates to play, pitching the fifth inning, allowing just a walk while striking out Miguel Palma for the third out.
With the loss, Salt River drops to 12-13, and they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games played.
Backed by 5 RBI from Marcus Semien, the Texas Rangers are one game away from winning the World Series. They defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7 after a late rally by the home team coming up short.
Arizona has had some issues with left-handed starting pitchers throughout the season and only managed one run on Andrew Heaney across five innings pitched.
The most significant bit of news to come from the day was that Max Scherzer and Adolis Garcia were both going to miss the rest of the World Series with injuries. Travis Jankowski replaced Garcia and picked up a pair of hits, driving in a pair and scoring two on his own.
I'll post this in the actual article in the morning so that more people can see it, but was debating doing some sort of mailbag-type weekly feature going forward, how would everyone feel about it?
I had been debating it for some time, Nola pointed out how much more popular they seem to be becoming, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to just keep doing what everyone else was doing.
What I love about this though is that everyone looks at the game differently, so you could still get different answers to the same question going from site to site. Plus I feel like I have a different perspective based on what I focus on.
So, let me know, I could create a separate email so you can submit that way, or you can send them to me on Twitter.
I found out about it several weeks ago, and pointed out on Twitter that Baseball America had it at that point when I was trying to find information on him. He signed for $30k.
