Morning Rundown: Pirates sign three, including Hunter Stratton, to minor league deals
The Pittsburgh Pirates added three players to the organization on minor league deals, including a familiar face
The Pittsburgh Pirates made a trio of minor-league signings on Monday, including bringing back a familiar name.
Hunter Stratton, Ryder Ryan, and Sergio Alcantara were signed to minor-league contracts.
Alcantara, 27, split last year between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020 and has 503 career plate appearances.
Primarily a shortstop, Alcantara has also played second and third base throughout his career.
Initially drafted in the 30th round by the Cleveland Guardians, Ryan made his major league debut this past season with the Seattle Mariners.
The 28-year-old pitched primarily for the Mariners Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma in 2023, posting a 3.76 ERA in 55 innings pitched.
He’s a sinker/slider guy who had a ground-ball rate of 45.6% last year in the minors.
Stratton was non-tendered earlier in the off-season by the Pirates and now returns on a minor league deal.
Drafted in the 17th round back in 2017 by the Pirates, Stratton made his major league debut this past season, posting a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings pitched.
He had spent parts of three years in Triple-A before getting the call to the majors. Stratton has consistently put up strong strikeout numbers but has struggled with control.
I’ll have more on Ryan and Alcantara and how they fit in the system later today, and I will do a more in-depth breakdown of Stratton later this week.
Every Monday during the offseason, we will be doing a mailbag article. Please send in your questions to have them answered! Either comment below with ‘mailbag’ entered in the message or email us at bucsondeckqa@gmail.com. I look forward to answering what you guys have!
Glad to see Hunter Stratton signed to a contract for 2024. A local kid from East TN (Bristol), and attended Walters State CC in Morristown, TN. Now the Bucs have he and Colin Selby back for 2024 - they were the leaders of the AAA Indy team with 6 Saves apiece, and both saw late season action with the Pirates. Selby has 2 Options remaining and Stratton has 3 Options remaining.
Incredible how much baseball media completely fucked the entire Ohtani signing and turned him into a villain in the process.
No more worthless, incompetent group of writers exist.
No clue how you people continually fall for their bullshit.
