Morning Rundown: Pirates take series on Joey Bart's walk-off
Pirates take two of three against the Braves
The Pittsburgh Pirates won the deciding third game of their weekend series against the Atlanta Braves on a walk-off by Joey Bart. It was the first series under new manager Don Kelly.
Carmen Mlodzinski pitched 5.2 shutout innings, striking out two as the Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Ryan Borucki came in and pitched two more shutout innings, striking out another two.
Tanner Rainey replaced Borucki and didn’t retire a hitter before being taken out for Joey Wentz. A bases clearing double by catcher Sean Murphy tied the game up.
In the bottom of the ninth, Adam Frazier and Ke’Bryan Hayes put runners on the corners with no outs after back-to-back hits. Bryan Reynolds grounded out, with Hayes going to second but Frazier unable to score.
Bart hit a gournder to Nick Allen, who tried to throw home, but it wasn’t in time as Frazier would score the winning run.
This gives the Pirates their first series win since facing the Los Angeles Angels on April 22-24. They now travel to New York to face another NL East team, the Mets.
Indianapolis Indians placed 1B Malcom Nunez on the 7-day injured list, retroactive May 10, 2025.

Obviously Rainey was a disappointment yesterday, but how's this for a manager sharing accountability with his players:
"It didn't work out. Some of that might be on me, too, because we had Rainey up a lot for different hitters and different stretches along the way," Kelly said. "Just didn't work out today in that lane, but he's been doing a great job."
I think so much better than what had become the standard "(player) needed to execute his (pitches/AB)" explanation with never any acknowledgement about not putting a player in the best position to succeed. Kelly can't work miracles with this roster, but he's such an easy guy to root for.
I think I would swap Shugart for Burrows.
