Morning Rundown: Pirates trade Adam Frazier to the Royals
Pirates make a trade with the Royals
The Pittsburgh Pirates made the first of what is expected to be several moves leading up to the upcoming trade deadline.
They shipped pending free agent Adam Frazier to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for shortstop Cam Devanney.
Frazier, 33, was in his second tour with the Pirates after getting drafted in the sixth round back in the 2013 draft.
He was solid, better than what the end numbers will look like, but at the end of the day, Frazier was an expiring contract on a team that wasn’t going to push for a playoff spot.
In 78 games, Frazier was hitting .255/.318/.336 with three home runs and seven stolen bases while registering an 82 wRC+ and had a 0.1 fWAR.
Devanney, 28, was a 15th-round pick out of Elon during the 2019 draft by the Brewers. He’s flashed some interesting pop the last couple of years in AAA, hitting a combined 37 home runs in 205 games in 2024 and 2025.
FanGraphs listed him as the 10th-ranked prospect in the Royals system, giving him a ‘55’ raw power (also a 50/55 game power) as well as a plus arm.
It is well assumed that Isiah Kiner-Falefa will get traded before the deadline, as he is another pending free agent. There weren’t many clear options to step in and play shortstop once that trade gets made, which this trade hints at Devanney getting the first crack at the starting job.
I’ll have more on Devanney over the weekend, going to spend today watching some videos on him.

Brazoban just got robbed of a walkoff HR. Kid looks much better than I expected.
FCL Bucs actually beat the effing delayed double steal. Got a nice return throw to the plate in time.
This LHP, Ronaldys Jimenez, has really good stuff, just walks too many. Not “wild” exactly, just misses by a little much of the time.
