Morning Rundown: Pirates two of three against Marlins, Carmen Mlodzinski recalled
Pirates win again, Mlodzinski recalled, injury updates
With their win on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates took two of three games against the Miami Marlins and have now won five of their last six.
Bailey Falter picked up his fifth win of the season after allowing one run on five hits and a walk, while striking out three over 5.1 innings pitched. David Bednar picked up his ninth save of the season.
Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run home run, giving the Pirates a 4-0 lead. That was McCutchen’s 241st home run as a Pirate, passing Roberto Clemente for third all-time in franchise history.
The Pirates conclude their nine-game homestand with a 6-3 record and now head to Chicago to face the Cubs in a four-game weekend series.
Bubba Chandler dealt with some more control issues, walking four batters and not making it out of the first inning during his start with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Walks have been somewhat of an issue for Chandler lately. He walked 15 batters in 28.1 innings during May. With Wednesday’s start, he now has five in 2.2 IP.
Carmen Mlodzinski was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and will serve in a bulk-reliever role, according to Noah Hiles.
After breaking into the majors as a reliever, Mlodzinski was given a chance to be a part of the rotation this year. In nine starts, he had a 5.67 ERA (4.24 xFIP) in 39.2 innings pitched.
He was optioned to Triple-A and made three more starts, this time posting a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 IP.
Kyle Nicolas was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Mlodzinski.
Some injury updates from Todd Tomczyk on Wednesday:
Endy Rodríguez is going to see the surgeon who did his UCL surgery in 2023. The Pirates are still calling it ‘elbow inflammation’ and that they are ‘still learning’ about the injury.
Johan Oviedo is throwing live batting practice at Pirate City right now. He’ll throw a few more, then progress to simulated games, and then have the conversation about a rehab assignment.
Colin Holderman has resumed throwing.
Tim Mayza and Justin Lawrence will begin throwing this weekend, but ‘have a ways to go.
Anthony Solometo has resumed throwing.

Tough series coming up. The Cubs are scoring buckets of runs. It's occurred to me that Kelly wanted Mlod to get all arms on deck for this series.
