Morning Rundown: Pirates win arbitration hearing with Dennis Santana, Bucs on Deck Top 25 prospects week
Pirates win arbitration case with Dennis Santana, Top 25 Pirates prospects released this week
The Pittsburgh Pirates won both arbitration hearings this season, as the arbiters ruled in favor of the club over right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana.
Claimed off waivers last year, Santana finished the 2024 season strong with the Pirates, posting a 2.44 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched. That wasn’t enough to win his arbitration case, as he submitted a salary of $2.1 million compared to the Pirates’ $1.4 million.
The Pirates also won their arbitration hearing with Johan Oviedo previously.
Starting today will be releasing our tie-in articles that lead into Friday’s drop of our Top 25 prospects for the Pirates organization.
WTM, NolaJeffy, and I voted on the list and participated in the tie-in articles. There will be a feature each day of the week that has to do with the list before it actually drops on Friday.
Today will be a roundtable style article with each of us giving a Top 25 player we feel could have a breakout season.
Monday will be a breakout candidate outside of our Top 25.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we will each have our own standalone feature that will give three players to watch outside the Top 25, trying to bring to light some of the lesser known prospects in the system.
Friday our Top 25 list will drop. That will include a write-up of each player that includes a 2024 recap, scouting report, and outlook for the upcoming season. Saturday we will some of the players that just missed out making our list, but you will likely see as we get graduations.

Welcome to the year of Bubba!
Winning in Arb is sometimes akin to losing, depending upon how the pitcher accepts the loss. Cannot blame him for trying to cash in on an excellent and very successful stint with the Pirates after ugly years with the Rangers in 2022, Mets in 2023, and Yankees in part of 2024 where his ERA was 6.26 in 23 games. With the Pirates he pitched in 39 games with a 2.44 ERA.
He maintains that type of consistent excellence in 2025 and THEN he can hit the pay line.
