Morning Rundown: Pirates win in Colorado, Henry Davis leaves game early
Pirates win 5-2, Henry Davis leaves game early
The Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of the traditionally hitter-friendly confines of Colorado, hitting three home runs en route to a 5-2 victory over the Rockies.
Andrew McCutchen, Bryan Reynolds, and Jack Suwinski all hit homers for the Pirates. McCutchen nearly had a second, a double that would have been a home run in 21 ballparks in the majors.
Carmen Mlodzinski started in what was another bullpen game. Luis Ortiz worked the bulk of the game, throwing five innings of one-run baseball. He’s brought his ERA down to 2.51, really finding a strong role in the bullpen for the Pirates.
The series continues tomorrow, with Jared Jones getting the nod on the mound.
Catcher Henry Davis left the game going into the bottom of the seventh, with Yasmani Grandal coming in to replace him.
The official word was that he was pulled due to concussion-like symptoms.
It’s been a tough season for the former first-overall pick. He struggled at the beginning of the season and was eventually sent down to work on some things in the minors.
After 22 games with Indianapolis, he came back up, but while he’s finally hit his first home run of the season, Davis is still slashing .153/.267/.235 with just five extra-base hits in 85 at-bats.
The Greensboro Grasshopper offense continues to mow through the Winston-Salem pitching staff this week.
After putting up 14 runs on Friday, they have scored a total of 38 over four games played this week, winning each of them. The pitching staff hasn’t done too bad as well, allowing just 12 runs this week.
With the first half winding down, the Grasshoppers are in first place in the South Atlantic North with a 35-25 record. They are a game ahead of Jersey Shore.
Whoever finishes first during the first half of the season automatically earns a playoff spot after the season.

Heat exhaustion for Brennan Malone. Why he left early. Had a baby three days ago so not much sleep/hospital food for a couple of days. He said he’d be back next week.
Seeing how it exploded raining down there mid game, humidity had to be through the roof
Down here at the hottest place on the planet, Pinehurst 2 for the US Open. I think it hit 93 and the sun is merciless. Followed Tiger and my thought regarding his day came true - he is not in shape to walk 18 in this type of heat and humidity. Looked like he would make the cut after the front nine, but he melted on the back.
Glad to see 'Cutch, Reynolds and Suwinski go yard, and an interesting move with Tri giving Oneil a one game break at SS. And, the Vols had them all the way in the CWS. Sweep of the whole system in the US? LL Ortiz is quickly establishing himself as a key part of the team.
