Morning Rundown: Quinn Priester placed on the injured list, Pirates sign reliever to major league deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates sign a new pitcher, Quinn Priester heads to the IL.
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have placed Quinn Priester on the 15-day injured list with a right lat muscle injury.
Priester, 23, last pitched on June 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays. It’s been a rough season for the former first-round pick, posting a 0-5 record with a 4.83 ERA.
He hasn’t gotten much run support, with eight runs in six starts—seven of which have come in his last two games.
His heading to the injured list leaves a rotation spot open. Daulton Jefferies and Braxton Ashcraft are the only starting pitchers on the 40-man roster who aren’t on the major league roster.
Ashcraft pitched on Thursday, Jefferies on Wednesday, taking them both out of the picture to possibly pitch on Saturday.
The Pirates announced that they have signed Justin Bruihl to a major league contract on Thursday.
Bruihl, 26, has a 4.22 ERA across 72 games in the majors, splitting time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies. He had been pitching in the Cincinnati Reds’ organization before recently becoming a free agent.
According to Baseball Savant, he throws a cutter, sinker, and slider. He doesn’t throw hard but does a good job keeping the ball on the ground, and opponents struggled to barrel things up.

JT Brubaker threw 2 in extended this week, due back around the All Star Break.
The Pirates did not waste any time bringing Bruihl into the BP and as has been his rep, he throws a lot of GB's. With the news that Borucki is basically lost for the year, this could be a solid add. Grew up in the Dodgers org and one year in the altitude of Colorado where breaking pitches go to die. Pittsburgh should be a positive environment for him.
