The Pirates walked a total of eight batters, and paid for it, as they lost to the Boston Red Sox 12-4 on Tuesday. Former Pirate Quinn Priester started and allowed one run (a home run) on four hits and a walk while striking out four batters.
Making his Pirates’ debut, Andrew Heaney had a rough go-around, allowing four earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out just one. Caleb Ferguson and Carmen Mlodzinski each pitched 2.2 innings. Ferguson allowed four earned runs while walking another two.
The offense was led by Ji Hwan Bae, who picked up three hits, scored twice and hit a home run to dead center field. Andrew McCutchen and Nick Gonzales had RBI hits while Tsung-Che Cheng also had a home run.
That’s 17 walks over the last two games the Pirates’ pitching staff has issued. They now have a 6-5 record.
Mitch Keller will get the start for the Pirates on Wednesday, facing Kevin Gausman and the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm ET at LECOM Park.
