Overview
Gray is a big third baseman who profiles as a power hitter. He hit well in his first two years at Fresno, with an .833 OPS as a freshman and .862 as a sophomore. He had a big junior year, batting 324/398/639 with 18 home runs and 73 RBIs in 60 games. Gray makes a lot of contact, not walking much but also striking out infrequently, just once every nine plate appearances as a junior. Baseball America ranked him 107th in the draft class and MLB Pipeline 141st. Maybe surprisingly, FanGraphs had him 19th. He’s strong and has very good bat speed, but tends to chase and may need to adjust his approach as a pro. He also tries to pull the ball a lot. Gray has a strong arm, but doesn’t run well and may not be mobile enough to stay at third. He could try an outfield corner but could also end up at first. The value for his slot is $1.13M.
