Omar Alfonzo picks up four hits, including a home run, in his Greensboro debut
Breaking down the four hit debut of Omar Alfonzo
After over 500 plate appearances in Single-A Bradenton, Omar Alfonzo was finally promoted to Greensboro to begin the week.
The 21-year-old catcher didn’t take long to get things going, reaching base all five times he came to the plate on Tuesday—four hits and a walk.
It’s been an up-and-down season for Alfonzo with Bradenton; when he’s been good, he’s been one of the better hitters in the league. But he’s also gone long stretches where he’s struggled with strikeouts and making consistent contact.
He’s fairly strong in the zone, making a lot of contact, and when he’s seeing the ball well, he doesn’t chase out of the zone.
The exit velocity points to someone who could potentially have above-average power, but he does struggle to elevate the ball at times, especially against breaking balls.
Looking at his first game in Greensboro, you can see many little pieces that made him an intriguing prospect in Bradenton and why we at the site have been high on him over the past year.
