Paul Skenes: Command/sequencing impressed over stuff in recent outing
While the attention goes to the velocity Paul Skenes throws with, it was a different part of his game that really stood out in a recent Grapefruit League outing.
Being the first overall pick comes with certain expectations, but for Paul Skenes, they may be even greater as he has been deemed one of the best pitching prospects to come out of the draft ever.
We’ve seen some of him this spring, pitching in two games, totaling three innings pitched.
While the attention quickly turns to his fastball, which can hit triple-digits reasonably easily, something else stands out when watching him pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays.
I was impressed that day by his command of his pitches and his willingness to revisit something that didn’t work initially.
Before we get to that, a quick look back at his outing in general. He allowed three hits, and one earned run in two innings pitched while striking out three batters.
