Paul Skenes showed a lot in a short Triple-A debut
2023 first overall pick picked up 12 whiffs on 46 total pitches thrown.
There was some debate about where first-overall pick Paul Skenes would begin the 2024 season after pitching briefly in Double-A Altoona to end last year.
He eventually was assigned to Triple-A, despite just 6.2 innings of professional baseball to his credit.
Things couldn't have gone better for Skenes, who was facing the Louisville Bats, the Cincinnati Reds' Triple-A affiliate.
He needed just 46 pitches to make it through three perfect innings, striking out five batters and averaging 100 MPH on the 22 fastballs he threw, according to statcast.
Skenes was able to generate 12 whiffs on 46 total pitches and 23 swings. The slider finished with an 80% whiff rate, getting four on five swings.
Overall, it was a great short outing in which Skenes still managed to incorporate everything that made him the number-one overall pick.
Opening the video, I looked at a few things that really stood out to me, keeping in mind that it was a very brief 46-pitch appearance.
