The Pittsburgh Pirates split their doubleheader on Wednesday against the New York Yankees, but they still dropped the series after also losing on Monday.
Jared Triolo and Jake Mangum registered RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning, giving the Pirates a lead in extras, with Gregory Soto closing things out, giving the road team the day half of the doubleheader.
The bats went silent in game two, registering just three hits while getting shut out by a combination of five Yankees’ pitchers, including Max Fried, who allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven over five innings pitched.
It was a fantastic night for the starting pitching on both sides. Mitch Keller tossed five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Bubba Chandler tossed 6.1 shutout innings in the nightcap, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five.
While they scored five runs in the first game, the Pirates offense also struck out 17 times that game, punching out 29 times overall.
After a day off on Thursday, the Pirates will return home for a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed one of their two second-round picks, infielder Chris Rembert, on Wednesday. According to Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline, the bonus is worth $2.4 million, which is over the slot value of $1,938,100 for the 51st overall pick.
A draft-eligible sophomore from Auburn, Rembert hit .343/.399/.459 in 2026, hitting four home runs, which was down from the 10 he hit as a freshman. He also played in five games in the Cape Cod League, posting a 1.431 OPS along with three home runs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have seen a major shift at the top of their system, having their two best prospects graduate to the majors. That would usually leave most organizations searching for talent, but the Pirates still have one of the top prospects in the game, Seth Hernandez, who tops the Bucs on Deck 2026 midseason update.
We have monthly and yearly plans available, with the latter costing an average of $4.16/month.
