Overview
Simon is a switch-hitter who’s hit fairly well in AAA, including moderate power. He’s not a big guy so he takes a big cut to generate the power, but his K rates haven’t been that high and his walk rates have been passable. He hasn’t had a platoon split at the upper levels. Simon has above average speed and has stolen a lot of bases in the minors. Defensively, his main position has been second, but he’s played short, third and the outfield corners. FanGraphs considers him at least average at second. The Pirates acquired Simon off waivers from the Marlins.
2018-20
After signing with the Cubs, Simon spent two years in the DSL. He didn’t play a lot and didn’t hit much in 2018, but he had a big year in 2019. He batted 333/411/571 with almost as many walks as strikeouts. With the minor league season canceled, he didn’t play in 2020. That November the Cubs dealt him to Arizona.
2021-22
Simon spent the bulk of the 2021 season in low A, where he hit for good power, putting up a line of 249/343/475 with 15 home runs in 77 games. His last 20 games came in high A. After the season, the D’backs traded him to the Rays.
In 2022, Simon spent two-thirds of the season in high A and the rest in AA. He actually hit better at the higher level, with an OPS of .814 versus .766. At both levels, his walk rate dropped off sharply and he didn’t get on base much. He did hit for power, totaling a career-high of 22 home runs. Between the two levels, Simon stole 34 bases in 42 tries.
2023-25
Simon split 2023 between AA and AAA, spending three-quarters of the seaosn in AA. He again hit better at the higher level, with a .714 OPS in AA and .807 in AAA. His walk rate bounced back to 11% and his K rate was 23%. He stole 31 bases total in 43 tries.
Simon spent all of 2024 in AAA and hit 283/356/429 with ten home runs. The Rays didn’t add him to their 40-man roster and he became a free agent, then signed a minor league deal with the Marlins for 2025. They sent him to AAA, but called him up several weeks into the season. He hit 234/327/277 in 19 games with Miami. He doesn’t seem to have been overwhelmed, as he had seven walks and seven strikeouts in 56 plate appearances. The Marlins designated Simon for assignment at the end of May, right after a game in which he made three errors in one inning. The Pirates claimed him off waivers a few days later. He went to Indianapolis, where he primarily played the outfield. He batted 284/381/436, with good walk and K rates. The Pirates called him up in mid-August, sent him back down two weeks later, then recalled him a few days later when Jack Suwinski got hurt. The next day he went out for the season with a separated shoulder. With the Pirates, Simon was 7-for-30 with a walk and eight strikeouts.
The Pirates designated Simon for assignment after the 2025 season, but signed him to a minor league deal for 2026.
