Termarr Johnson Leads Next Wave Of Hitting Prospects

With a large group of the Pirates top hitting prospects set to graduate at some point this season, who will be the next wave coming up through the system.

Even with Henry Davis recently graduating from prospect status, the Pittsburgh Pirates still have five position players that are categorized as ‘rookies’ based on major league service time.

Of those, four find themselves on the Pirates’ Top 30 prospects list on MLB Pipeline. If they all remain on the roster for the remainder of the season, they too will also graduate, leaving several holes in the system prospect wise.

(Disclaimer: This was written before Nick Gonzales was sent back to the minors, which obviously changes up the numbers in this a bit, but there’s always the chance he’s back up with enough time to still graduate).

In a sense, it’s a good thing to see your former top prospects graduate and become major league regulars, that’s the point of all of this.

It also leaves a lot of question marks as to what is still left in the system when it comes to position players, especially with so many graduating at one time.

Being the team’s first round pick in 2022, Termarr Johnson easily slides in as the team’s best hitting prospect, and depending on the outlet you check he may already be in that position.

Johnson, 19, had one of the most hyped hit tools in recent draft history, getting some pretty lofty comparisons throughout the process.
